Compton Station Specific Plan

Client: City of Compton

The Arroyo Group is leading a multidiscipinary team to prepare a Transit Oriented Development Specific Plan for the City of Compton for the area surrounding the Metro A Line (formerly Blue Line) Compton Station. The Plan adds higher density and low income housing, cultural and entertainment destinations, and open space, using first-last mile connections to increase accessibility to Compton Station.

The planning process has included a strategic evaluation of the reuse of public-owned land in order to spur revitalization in this economically challenged community while at the same time directing growth toward uses and industries that most benefit Compton residents themselves, and provide a bulwark against displacement pressures that may arise. A physical framework for future civic spaces and public art opportunities was created to help connect the district and allow Compton to express its strong cultural offerings to the world. In the middle of the process, the City decided to pursue redevelopment of two publicly-owned blocks at 501/601 E. Compton Boulevard into a dense mixed-income housing development with a 40,000 square foot Innovation Hub media incubator and community-serving retail. The Arroyo Group quickly prepared a Specific Plan for this project which demonstrated the development standards which are anticipated for the TOD area as a whole.

Extensive outreach has been conducted at several community events along with a popular, project-specific Instagram account, online videos and surveys.
